Your WhatsApp has been compromised? Here is what you should do

If someone has taken control of your WhatsApp, it’s stressful — but this is fixable. You don’t need to be technical. Just follow the steps below, in order.

How to Tell Something Is Wrong

Your WhatsApp may be compromised if:

  • You suddenly can’t open WhatsApp anymore
  • Your friends say you sent messages you don’t remember sending
  • Messages asking for money or links were sent from your account
  • Your photo or status changed by itself
  • You received a WhatsApp code you did not ask for

If one or more of these happened, assume your account is compromised.

Step 1: Take Back Your Account (Most Important Step)

WhatsApp works with one phone number at a time. Whoever controls the number controls the account.

What to do:

1. Open WhatsApp on your phone
2. Enter your phone number
3. Ask for a new code (SMS or call)
4. Enter the code when it arrives

That’s it.
When you do this, the attacker is automatically kicked out, even if they were using WhatsApp on another device.

If WhatsApp asks for a PIN you don’t know

This means the attacker added extra protection.

  • Don’t panic
  • Wait a few days (up to 7)
  • Then try again

They cannot keep your account forever.

Step 2: Remove Unknown Devices

Sometimes attackers stay connected on computers.

1. Open WhatsApp
2. Go to Settings
3. Tap Linked devices
4. Log out of everything you don’t recognize

If in doubt, log out of all devices.

Step 3: Warn Your Contacts

Attackers usually use your account to trick your friends.

Send a simple message like:

> “My WhatsApp was hacked earlier. Please ignore any strange messages or links you received from me.”

This protects others and stops the scam from spreading.

Step 4: Secure Your Account So It Doesn’t Happen Again

Do these once you’re back in control.

Turn on Two-Step Verification

This adds a secret PIN only you know.

  • WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Two-step verification
  • Choose a PIN you won’t forget
  • Add an email if asked (this helps recovery)

Lock WhatsApp on Your Phone

Use fingerprint, face, or phone PIN so no one can open it if they touch your phone.

Update WhatsApp

Updates fix security problems. Old versions are easier to attack.

Very Important Rules (Read This Carefully)

  • Never share WhatsApp codes with anyone — not friends, not “support”, not family
  • WhatsApp will never ask for your code in a message

Be suspicious of urgent messages like:

  • “Send this code quickly”
  • “I need help now”
  • “Click this link”

These are common tricks.

If You Still Can’t Get Back In

If nothing works:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Go to Help → Contact us
  • Explain that your account was taken over
  • Write your phone number with country code

This is the official recovery path.
